Understanding Structural Damage From Fire and Smoke: Expert Insights
12/18/2024 (Permalink)
Dive into the nature of structural damage from fire and smoke, providing expert insights to help you recognize and address it effectively.
Fire damage can be devastating to a building’s structure, often extending far beyond what is visible. Understanding the full scope of structural damage caused by fire and smoke is critical for ensuring safety and proper restoration. When a building suffers fire damage, the impact isn't limited to just burnt walls and ceilings—it can weaken the very foundation and structural integrity of the property. In this blog, we’ll dive into the nature of structural damage from fire and smoke, providing expert insights to help you recognize and address it effectively.
The Scale of Fire Damage
To fully understand the impact of fire on a building, it’s helpful to look at some statistics. In 2022, there were 1.5 million fires reported in the United States, which resulted in an estimated $18 billion in property damage, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). This staggering figure highlights just how destructive fires can be, especially to the structural integrity of homes and businesses.
What is Structural Damage from Fire and Smoke?
Structural damage from fire refers to the destruction or weakening of the foundational elements that make up a building, including walls, beams, roofs, and floors. When a fire burns, the intense heat can cause materials like wood, steel, and concrete to deteriorate or warp, compromising the building’s stability. Smoke, often underestimated, can also contribute to this damage by infiltrating crevices and causing corrosion over time.
Key Components Affected by Structural Damage
- Load-Bearing Walls and Beams
Fire can weaken or destroy these critical elements. Wood structures may char and lose their strength, while steel can warp under extreme heat. When these components are compromised, it increases the risk of partial or full collapse. - Floors and Roofs
Flames can severely damage floors and roof structures, often rendering them unsafe to walk on or live under. The heat can cause them to sag, crack, or become unstable, making immediate repairs a priority. - Concrete and Masonry
Although concrete and masonry are more resistant to fire, they can still suffer from spalling (surface breaking apart) due to rapid temperature changes. This weakens the material’s structural integrity, and cracks can form, leading to long-term issues if not addressed. - Smoke Damage to Structural Elements
Smoke leaves behind acidic residues that can corrode metal components like pipes, wiring, and framing. Additionally, porous materials like wood and insulation can absorb smoke, leading to long-term structural weakening.
Assessing Structural Damage After a Fire
After a fire, a comprehensive assessment is essential to determine the extent of structural damage. Here’s what professionals look for:
- Visual Inspection: Identifying visible signs of warping, charring, or cracks in load-bearing walls, ceilings, and floors.
- Thermal Imaging: Using thermal cameras to detect hidden heat pockets, which could indicate internal damage.
- Structural Integrity Testing: Evaluating beams and supports to determine if they can still bear weight safely.
Steps to Address Fire and Smoke Structural Damage
Repairing structural damage caused by fire and smoke requires expertise and careful attention to detail. Here's how to approach it:
1. Contact a Professional Fire Restoration Service
Immediately after the fire, contact experts like SERVPRO®, who specialize in fire damage restoration. They have the knowledge, experience, and tools to assess and restore structural damage properly.
2. Assess the Extent of Damage
SERVPRO professionals will conduct a thorough inspection of the property, evaluating everything from walls and floors to beams and insulation. This is essential to determine what needs to be repaired or replaced.
3. Stabilize the Structure
If the building has suffered significant structural damage, it may be necessary to stabilize it. This could involve temporary supports for beams, walls, or even sections of the roof to prevent collapse.
4. Remove Debris and Damaged Materials
Burnt materials, ash, and debris should be carefully removed from the building. Hazardous materials must be disposed of safely, and any components that can’t be salvaged will need to be replaced.
5. Reinforce or Rebuild Key Structural Elements
Depending on the extent of the damage, load-bearing walls, beams, and floors may need reinforcement or complete reconstruction. SERVPRO experts will determine the best approach for restoring the building's structural integrity.

Mold and Moisture Control in Commercial Buildings: Expert Insights from SERVPRO®
11/13/2024 (Permalink)
We explore how to effectively control mold and moisture in commercial buildings.
Mold and moisture issues are common concerns for commercial building owners and managers in Las Vegas, NV. Excess moisture can lead to mold growth, damaging the structure and resulting in unpleasant odors and costly repairs. Keeping mold and humidity under control is essential for maintaining the integrity and safety of your commercial property. In this blog, we will explore how to effectively control mold and moisture in commercial buildings and provide expert tips to prevent these problems from escalating.
Why Mold and Moisture Are a Problem in Commercial Properties
Mold thrives in moist environments, and commercial buildings are especially vulnerable due to the high occupancy, large HVAC systems, and often complex plumbing networks. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), mold can begin to grow on damp surfaces within 24 to 48 hours, making quick and consistent moisture control crucial in preventing mold from taking hold.
In commercial spaces, mold can be particularly problematic in areas such as basements, restrooms, kitchens, and HVAC systems. If left unchecked, mold can cause damage to walls, ceilings, and even furniture, leading to costly repairs and renovations. Additionally, the presence of mold can create an unpleasant environment for employees, clients, and tenants.
How to Control Mold and Moisture in Commercial Buildings
Preventing mold and moisture buildup requires a proactive approach to building maintenance. Here are the essential strategies for controlling mold and moisture in your commercial property:
1. Regular Inspections for Leaks and Water Damage
Water intrusion is one of the leading causes of mold growth. Regularly inspecting your commercial building for leaks, water damage, and plumbing issues is essential to catching moisture problems before they turn into mold infestations.
- Inspect plumbing systems: Regularly check for leaks in pipes, faucets, and drains. Even minor leaks can lead to moisture buildup over time.
- Inspect roofing and windows: Check for signs of water intrusion around windows, doors, and the roof, especially after heavy rain. Leaks from roofing or poorly sealed windows can allow water to seep into walls and ceilings.
- Monitor HVAC systems: HVAC systems are prone to moisture accumulation, especially in ducts and around air conditioning units. Make sure your system is functioning correctly and doesn’t show signs of excess moisture or condensation.
2. Maintain Optimal Indoor Humidity Levels
Controlling humidity is one of the most effective ways to prevent mold growth in commercial buildings. Mold typically thrives in environments with humidity levels above 60%, so it’s crucial to maintain optimal humidity levels throughout the property.
- Use dehumidifiers: In moisture-prone areas such as basements, server rooms, or storage areas, install dehumidifiers to keep the humidity level between 30% and 50%.
- Install humidity monitors: Place humidity monitors throughout the building, especially in high-risk areas, to keep track of moisture levels and ensure they remain in the ideal range.
3. Ensure Proper Ventilation
Good ventilation is key to preventing moisture buildup in enclosed spaces. Poorly ventilated areas, such as restrooms, kitchens, and storage rooms, are prone to moisture accumulation, which can lead to mold growth.
- Use exhaust fans: Make sure bathrooms, kitchens, and other moisture-producing areas are equipped with working exhaust fans to remove excess moisture from the air.
- Regularly clean HVAC systems: Dust and debris can accumulate in your building’s HVAC system, trapping moisture and creating an environment conducive to mold. Ensure your system is regularly cleaned and serviced.
4. Quickly Address Water Intrusion and Flooding
If your commercial building experiences flooding or water intrusion, it’s critical to address the issue immediately to prevent mold growth. Mold can start growing in just 24 to 48 hours, so prompt action is necessary.
- Dry out affected areas quickly: Use industrial fans and dehumidifiers to dry out areas affected by water intrusion as quickly as possible.
- Remove standing water: Ensure that standing water is promptly removed from floors, carpets, and any other affected surfaces.
5. Use Mold-Resistant Materials
When building or renovating a commercial property, choosing mold-resistant materials can help reduce the risk of future mold growth. Mold-resistant drywall, insulation, and paints are specifically designed to prevent mold from thriving in moist environments.
- Install mold-resistant drywall: In moisture-prone areas, consider using mold-resistant drywall to prevent mold from taking root behind walls.
- Use mold-resistant insulation: Certain types of insulation are designed to resist moisture, which can prevent mold growth in wall cavities and ceilings.

Top Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Restoration Company
10/16/2024 (Permalink)
If you’re in Las Vegas, NV, and need help after water damage, fire, or mold, SERVPRO of Centennial Hills is here to help.
When disaster strikes, whether it's water damage, fire, or mold, choosing the right restoration company is crucial to getting your home or business back to normal. In Las Vegas, NV, where extreme weather events and other emergencies can happen unexpectedly, it’s important to know what to look for in a restoration company. Asking the right questions before hiring a restoration service can save you time, money, and stress. Here are the top questions you should ask to ensure you’re making the best choice.
1. Are You Licensed and Insured?
One of the first things to ask any restoration company is whether they are properly licensed and insured. In Nevada, restoration companies are required to hold specific licenses to operate legally. A licensed company has met the state's requirements for training and expertise, ensuring they can handle the job professionally. Additionally, insurance is essential because it protects you and the company in case of accidents or damage during the restoration process. Without proper insurance, you could be held liable for any mishaps that occur on your property
2. What Certifications Do Your Technicians Have?
Restoration work requires specialized skills and knowledge. Ask about the certifications held by the company’s technicians. The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification (IICRC) is a globally recognized organization that provides certification for restoration professionals. According to the IICRC, having certified technicians means the team has undergone rigorous training and adheres to industry standards. Hiring a company with IICRC-certified technicians ensures that your property will be restored using the best practices and latest techniques.
3. Do You Offer 24/7 Emergency Services?
Disasters don’t wait for convenient times to happen. Whether it’s a flood in the middle of the night or a fire over the weekend, you need a restoration company that offers 24/7 emergency services. Fast response is crucial to minimizing damage and beginning the restoration process as quickly as possible. Ask if the company is available around the clock and how quickly they can be on-site after an emergency call.
4. What Is Your Estimated Timeline and Cost?
Understanding the expected timeline and cost for your restoration project is essential for planning and peace of mind. Ask for a detailed estimate that includes all potential costs and a clear timeline for the completion of the work. Keep in mind that while an estimate is helpful, the final cost can vary depending on the extent of the damage and any unforeseen issues that arise during the restoration process. A reliable company will keep you informed of any changes and work with you to stay within your budget.
5. How Do You Handle Insurance Claims?
Navigating insurance claims can be a complex and stressful part of the restoration process. It’s helpful to work with a company that has experience dealing with insurance companies. Ask if the restoration company will assist you with the claims process, including documenting damage, providing estimates, and communicating with your insurance adjuster. Some companies may even offer direct billing to your insurance provider, reducing the hassle for you.
Making the Right Choice in Las Vegas, NV
Choosing the right restoration company is key to ensuring that your home or business is restored efficiently and effectively. By asking these important questions, you can feel confident that you’re hiring a team that’s experienced, reliable, and prepared to handle your restoration needs. A fire in your home is a scary thought but it also a possibility for anyone. Fires spread quickly and leave only a few minutes for families to escape. Families should have a safety plan in place and practice it to be sure everyone in the home knows what to do in case of a fire.
The National Fire Protection Association gives the following tips in creating an escape plan:
- Pull together everyone in your household and make a plan. Walk through your home and inspect all possible exits and escape routes. Households with children should consider drawing a floor plan of your home, marking two ways out of each room, including windows and doors. Also, mark the location of each smoke alarm.
- A closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat and fire. Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home.
- When you walk through your plan, check to make sure the escape routes are clear and doors and windows can be opened easily.
- Choose an outside meeting place a safe distance in front of your home where everyone can meet after they've escaped.
- Go outside to see if your street number is clearly visible from the road. If not, paint it on the curb or install house numbers to ensure that responding emergency personnel can find your home.
- If there are infants, older adults, or family members with mobility limitations, make sure that someone is assigned to assist them in the fire drill and in the event of an emergency. Assign a backup person too, in case the designee is not home during the emergency
- If windows or doors in your home have security bars, make sure that the bars have emergency release devices inside so that they can be opened immediately in an emergency. Emergency release devices won't compromise your security - but they will increase your chances of safely escaping a home fire.
- Tell guests or visitors to your home about your family's fire escape plan. When staying overnight at other people's homes, ask about their escape plan. If they don't have a plan in place, offer to help them make one. This is especially important when children are permitted to attend "sleepovers" at friends' homes.
- Once you're out, stay out! Under no circumstances should you ever go back into a burning building. If someone is missing, inform the fire department dispatcher when you call. Firefighters have the skills and equipment to perform rescues.
Your first line of notification is the fire alarms, practice regular maintenance on smoke detectors. Review your plan often and make changes as needed.

Storm Ready

Rain storm causing a mud slide into local residential home.
Flood damage can be devastating for homeowners and restoring normality after water damage is no easy task. Las Vegas residents have seen the massive flooding in the valley, cars being swept away, and rescue mission from first responders but what we don't always see is the damage done to the homes after the flood. SERVPRO of Centennial Hills has some tips for those that live in known flood zones or even for those who want be proactive in safeguarding their property.
- During stormy weather conditions, lock all doors and windows
- Place sandbags around door and window openings: keep sandbags in your garage or storage to be prepared for these occasions
- Collect other emergency materials like buckets, plywood, waterproof plastic sheeting, duct tape, and shovels
- Listen out for flood alerts in your area
- Run through an emergency procedure with your family – plan what you will do and where you will go if a flood hits
- Ensure everyone in the house knows how to shut off utilities in an emergency
- Store your important documents and valuable items in a secure, high location – like a secure water-tight safe stored on top of a wardrobe, or in the highest point of your house
- Install flood-proof doors in your home (or at least the outside doors) to prevent all possible water from entering the property.
We hope these tips have helped you prepare for future floods, whether you reside in Vegas or elsewhere. Remember to keep safe and seek shelter on high ground as soon as possible during flooding.
Rain storms wreaking havoc!

Temporary tarping of a roof.
Las Vegas can go 100+ days with no rain, but we are no stranger to heavy rainstorms in the valley. We often see news reports about flash flooding and traffic accidents but we do not always hear about the damages it causes to homes here in Las Vegas. The most common issue SERVPRO of Centennial Hills comes across during or even after a rain storm is a roof leak. Normal wear and tear on a roof can lead to a leak during a storm. Heavy winds can also cause damage to the roof then result in a leak. Water travels through the damaged area and begins to pool on a flat surface. As the amount of water increases and time passes by the materials begin to weaken. You can see in this photo that a temporary tarp is being put in place until the roof repair has been made. Water will eventually make its way into the dwelling causing ceiling drywall staining and paint deterioration. You then risk the potential growth of mold and mildew. It is important to have trained professionals like SERVPRO of Centennial Hills arrive on site as soon as possible to remove the damaged materials and begin the process of drying the structure to eliminate further damage.
